## What is an Antipode?

An **antipode** (pronounced AN-ti-pohd; plural: antipodes, an-TIP-uh-deez) is the point on Earth's surface that is diametrically opposite to another point. A straight line drawn between a location and its antipode passes directly through the center of the Earth. The term comes from Greek: "anti-" (opposite) + "pous" (foot), literally meaning "opposite feet"—the place where people would be standing feet-to-feet with you through the Earth.

- Every point on Earth has exactly one antipode
- Antipodes are the maximum possible distance apart on Earth's surface (approximately 20,037 km or 12,451 miles)
