Antipode of Hawaii
The antipode of Hawaii is the point on Earth diametrically opposite its centroid. The state's centroid is at 21.0411°, -158.1855°, and its antipodal point is at coordinates -21.0411°, 21.8145°.
About the Antipode of Hawaii
An antipode is the point on Earth's surface that is diametrically opposite to a given location. For Hawaii, with a centroid at coordinates 21.0411°, -158.1855°, the antipodal point is at -21.0411°, 21.8145°.
How is the Antipode Calculated?
To find the antipode of any location:
- Latitude: Invert the sign (21.0411° becomes -21.0411°)
- Longitude: Add or subtract 180° (-158.1855° becomes 21.8145°)
Why Are Most U.S. Antipodes in the Ocean?
Over 70% of the Earth's surface is water, and the contiguous United States lies entirely in the Northern Hemisphere. The antipodal points for most U.S. states fall in the Southern Hemisphere's vast Indian Ocean. Only Alaska and Hawaii have small land overlaps with Antarctica, Africa, and French Southern territories.
Hawaii's Unique Terrestrial Antipodes
Hawaii is one of the few U.S. states whose land has a terrestrial antipode. While the main Hawaiian Islands are roughly antipodal to regions of Botswana, the antipodes of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands extend into Namibia and other parts of southern Africa. This makes Hawaii unique among U.S. states—if you could drill straight through the Earth from Hawaii, you would emerge on dry land rather than ocean.
